Summer 2021 - Based on our team’s exploration in the previous semester, DMAE offered a summer class to develop the VP capabilities at LSU. This was the first undergraduate VP focused class at LSU. The work helped also supported LSU’s grant application.

By August 2021, the Louisiana Economic Development (LED) Entertainment Development Fund awarded LSU a grant that will invest a total of $1.8 million over 5 years.

Pt. 2 - Virtual Production
Pipeline Development

Out To Sea

During the 2021 summer term I worked with an undergrad class to assemble their first green screen production in Unreal Engine 4.26 based on our “Mustang Garage” project in Part 1. This new two week project also composited a live actor on a virtual background, and still used an HTC Vive to track camera movement.

Primary Contribution: Director of Photography and Workflow Refinement

Needing to teach is the fastest path to understanding and refining a process. In this class, I mentored a team of undergrads and helped them setup both foreground and background composite setups based on our first experimental project.

For Out To Sea, I worked on improving our camera tracking setup by refining the HTC Vive setup, and adding Lonet2 to integrate focus tracking. Adding a second Black Magic capture card also allowed us to view the real-time composite from UE4 while operating the camera.
