XBox Game Camp 2020
I entered XBox Game Camp New Orleans as an individual, and was placed in team Boy Howdy with six other individual applicants. Despite not having worked together before, our team brought together a variety of skills and backgrounds. For this project, I worked in Unity for the first time, and primarily focused on map design and UI for our team.
“In a post-apocalyptic world filled with angels, demons and washed-up musicians, Kali must fight, battle and rock her way to salvation. “
Sounds of the Wasteland was inspired by musician and producer Lou Hill of Water Seed in New Orleans. The story originated around his experience driving his band’s gear to gigs as far as Los Angeles. On these road trips, Lou would spend days driving across deserts in the Southwest, meeting all kinds of musicians along the way.
In this 3rd-person action game, the player must face powerful enemy factions from varying musical genres, while fending off zombie-like hordes who are drawn to the music. Aspirationally, we had future plans to borrow from rhythm games and reward players who followed the music. Special moves or bonuses could be rewarded for moving/attacking with the beat.
Environment Design
I built one map using purchased assets during the Game Camp which we used to learn and implement our game mechanics. As my first step into the field of game design, working with my team and our mentor was an incredible hands-on learning experience.
